What Is an AI-Assisted Karyotyping?

AI-Assisted Karyotyping is an advanced laboratory test that creates a visual profile of your chromosomes using artificial intelligence technology. This enhanced version of traditional karyotyping uses AI software to automatically identify, sort, and arrange chromosomes from your cell sample, making the process faster and more accurate than manual analysis.

The test uses a blood sample taken from a vein in your arm. The AI technology assists laboratory experts in automatically identifying, sorting, and arranging chromosomes to create what's called a karyogram reviewed by Certified Expert Cytogeneticists.

This test detects abnormalities in chromosome numbers or structures, diagnoses genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, and identifies chromosomal changes in cancer cells that can guide treatment decisions.

What Does the AI-Assisted Karyotyping Measure?

The Karyo-AI test examines your complete set of chromosomes to identify any irregularities:

  • Chromosome count: Counts the total number of chromosomes to identify any missing or extra ones (normal is 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs).
  • Chromosome structure: Examines size, shape, and banding patterns to spot structural changes like deletions, translocations, or inversions.
  • Sex chromosomes: Confirms your genetic sex chromosomes (XX for female, XY for male) and identifies any related abnormalities.
  • Numerical abnormalities: Detects conditions such as Down syndrome (an extra copy of chromosome 21) or Turner syndrome (a missing or incomplete X chromosome).
  • Structural rearrangements: Identifies broken or rearranged chromosome pieces that may affect health.
  • Cancer-related changes: Detects characteristic chromosomal abnormalities in blood cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma

AI-Assisted Karyotyping: Who Needs It and Why It's Done

What Symptoms May Call for an AI-Assisted Karyotyping?

Your doctor may recommend an AI karyotyping test if you or your unborn baby shows signs suggesting chromosomal abnormalities:

  • For newborns and children: Developmental delays, intellectual disability, slow growth, or physical features of genetic syndromes.
  • For adults: Fertility problems, difficulty conceiving, or a history of two or more miscarriages
  • During pregnancy: Abnormal pregnancy screening results, family history of chromosomal conditions, or advanced maternal age (over 35).
  • For cancer patients: Diagnosis and treatment planning for blood cancers like leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma.

Who Should Get an AI-Assisted Karyotyping?

The Karyo AI test is recommended for specific groups who may benefit from chromosome analysis:

  • Expectant parents: Especially those with high-risk pregnancies, screening for genetic conditions.
  • Couples facing fertility issues: To determine if chromosomal problems cause infertility or pregnancy loss.
  • Individuals with genetic disorder symptoms: Children or adults need a definitive diagnosis.
  • People with a family history: Those with close relatives who have known chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Cancer patients: To help doctors choose targeted, effective treatments through precision oncology.

Importance of an AI-Assisted Karyotyping

The use of artificial intelligence in karyotyping significantly improves efficiency and standardization of chromosome analysis. Traditional karyotyping requires highly skilled experts and can take several weeks, whereas AI software analyzes chromosomes much faster, reducing turnaround time to days. This speed is critical for timely medical decisions in prenatal diagnosis and cancer care.

In cancer treatment, identifying specific chromosomal rearrangements allows doctors to use targeted therapies that are more effective with fewer side effects than general chemotherapy. For families dealing with developmental disorders, the AI karyotyping test provides a definitive diagnosis, ending long searches for answers and enabling appropriate medical management.

The following table helps you understand what your AI-assisted karyotyping results mean:

Parameter

Normal Result

Abnormal Result Indication

Total Chromosomes

46 chromosomes (23 pairs)

Missing or extra chromosomes may indicate genetic syndromes.

Sex Chromosomes

XX (female) or XY (male)

Abnormal patterns may suggest sex chromosome disorders.

Chromosome Structure

Normal size, shape, and banding pattern

Structural changes may indicate genetic conditions or cancer.

Derivative Chromosomes

No derivative chromosomes are present.

The presence indicates chromosomal rearrangements requiring further testing.

Conditions that May Affect AI-Assisted Karyotyping Accuracy

Several factors can influence your AI-assisted karyotyping results and should be discussed with your doctor:

  • Sample quality: Clotted, hemolyzed, or insufficient blood samples may affect cell growth and analysis.
  • Medications: Certain medicines that affect cell division may impact chromosome analysis.
  • Recent chemotherapy or radiation: Cancer treatments can damage chromosomes and affect results.
  • Age of sample: Delayed processing or improper storage can reduce cell viability.
  • Mosaicism: Low-grade chromosomal mosaicism may require analysis of additional cells for detection.
  • Technical limitations: Very small deletions or duplications may require additional specialised testing.

How Is an AI-Assisted Karyotyping Done?

The AI-assisted karyotyping test process involves several carefully coordinated steps to ensure accurate chromosome analysis:

  • A healthcare professional draws 3-4 ml of blood from a vein in your arm using a sodium heparin tube.
  • Your blood cells are grown in laboratory culture for 72 hours with special agents that stimulate cell division.
  • Cells are treated to stop division when chromosomes are most visible under the microscope.
  • Chromosomes are spread on glass slides and stained using the G-banding technique for clear visualization.
  • Advanced artificial intelligence software automatically identifies, counts, and arranges chromosomes.
  • The report is available after 7 days and provides a detailed interpretation of any abnormalities found.

How Should You Prepare for an AI-Assisted Karyotyping?

Preparing for your AI-assisted karyotyping test is straightforward:

  • No fasting required: You can eat and drink normally before the test.
  • Continue regular medications: Take your usual medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking water makes it easier to draw blood from your vein.
  • Provide clinical history: Share detailed medical information with your doctor.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Choose clothes that allow easy access to your arms.
  • Inform about supplements: Tell your doctor about all the vitamins and herbal supplements you take.

Diseases that an AI-Assisted Karyotyping Can Help Detect

The AI karyotyping can identify various genetic conditions and chromosomal abnormalities:

  • Down syndrome: Extra copy of chromosome 21, causing intellectual disability and characteristic features.
  • Turner syndrome: Missing or incomplete X chromosome in females affecting growth and development.
  • Klinefelter syndrome: An extra X chromosome in males, causing fertility issues and developmental changes.
  • Blood cancers: Chromosomal changes in leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma that guide treatment decisions.
  • Balanced translocations: Rearranged chromosomes that may cause fertility problems or affect offspring.
  • Deletion syndromes: Missing chromosome segments causing various developmental disorders.
