Allergy - Mold Panel Overview

An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system that causes undesirable reactions to certain substances like food, dust, pollen, drugs or even animal dander. These reactions normally do not occur in others. The substance causing the reaction is an allergen. Immunoglobin E is an antibody that the body produces in case of an allergic reaction. Allergy- Mold panel is a comprehensive screening that tests the body's reaction to 5 different types of molds (fungi) using ImmunoCAP technique by measuring allergen-specific IgE against them. Based on the results the source of allergy/allergies is determined and the course of treatment is decided accordingly. Total IgE test is a blood test used to measure the complete IgE levels in the blood, but it does not indicate what is the specific allergen causing the reaction.

The Mould Allergy Test is a specialised blood test designed to detect allergic reactions to various types of mould and fungus. This panel utilises the ImmunoCAP technique to measure specific IgE antibodies and total IgE antibodies against common mould species, such as Aspergillus fumigatus, Cladosporium herbarum, Candida albicans, Alternaria alternata, and Penicillium chrysogenum. By identifying an individual's sensitivity to these allergens, the test helps diagnose mould allergies and guide appropriate treatment plans.

Mould allergies can cause a range of symptoms, including sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, nasal congestion, and asthma-like symptoms. The Mould Allergy Test provides valuable information for individuals experiencing these symptoms or those with a family history of allergies, enabling them to assess their risk and take proactive steps to manage their health.

Reasons for Undergoing the Mould Allergy Test

There are several reasons why a doctor may recommend the Mould Allergy Test:

  • Symptoms suggestive of a mould allergy, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes or throat, irritated skin, and difficulty breathing
  • History of allergies, especially if mould exposure is suspected as a contributing factor
  • Long-term exposure to mould, particularly in areas with high humidity and poor ventilation
  • To enable early diagnosis and management of mould allergies, which can help prevent potential complications like asthma

List of Parameters Considered During the Mould Allergy Test

The Mould Allergy Test measures the levels of IgE antibodies in the blood, which are produced by the immune system in response to specific mould allergens. The panel typically includes tests for several common mould allergens:

  • Specific IgE Antibodies: The test measures specific IgE antibodies against various mould species, including Aspergillus fumigatus, Cladosporium herbarum, Candida albicans, Alternaria alternata, and Penicillium chrysogenum. Elevated levels of these antibodies indicate an allergic reaction to the corresponding moulds.
  • Total IgE Antibodies: The panel also measures the overall level of IgE antibodies in the blood, providing insights into the individual's general allergic status.

Mould Allergy Test Preparation

Preparing for the Mould Allergy Test involves the following steps:

  • Fasting: Some laboratories may require fasting for 10-12 hours before the blood sample is collected.
  • No Specific Diet Restrictions: In most cases, no specific dietary restrictions are necessary, but it is always best to follow the advice of your doctor or the laboratory technician.
  • Informing About Medications: It is important to inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, especially those that might affect the test results.

Mould Allergy Test Results & Interpretation

The results of the Mould Allergy Test are typically categorised as follows:

  • Negative: Indicates no significant allergic response to the tested mould allergens
  • Positive: Suggests an allergic reaction to the specific mould allergens tested. The levels of IgE antibodies are often quantified, with higher levels indicating a stronger allergic response

Interpreting the results involves understanding the specific mould allergens that triggered a positive response and the severity of the reaction. This information helps in diagnosing and managing mould allergies by guiding treatment plans and avoidance strategies.

Frequently asked questions

  • The Allergy Mold Panel is done to determine if your body has an allergic reaction to specific types of mold commonly found indoors and outdoors.
  • This test helps pinpoint the cause of allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, and irritated skin, when you suspect mold exposure might be the culprit.
  • By identifying the specific molds you're allergic to, doctors can recommend targeted treatment options and strategies to minimize exposure to those triggers, improving your overall allergy management.

The Allergy - Mold Panel measures the presence and levels of specific IgE antibodies in your blood that are produced in response to 5 mold allergens:

  1. Penicillium notatum
  2. Cladosporium herbarum
  3. Aspergillus fumigatus
  4. Candida albicans
  5. Alternaria tenuis (also known as Alternaria alternata)

The overall level of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in the blood is also measured.

The test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased IgE levels further confirms that. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis.

Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis.
