An allergy is an immune system hypersensitivity condition that results in unfavourable reactions to certain items, such as food, dust, pollen, medications, or even animal dander. An allergy is a material producing the reaction. The body creates the antibody immunoglobin E in the event of such an allergic reaction. A complete IgE test measures the total IgE levels present in the blood, whereas it does not reveal which particular allergen is the source of the reaction.

Using the ImmunoCAP technology, the Allergy-GIT Panel (Veg + Non-Veg) examines the body's reactivity to 43 eaten vegetarian and nonvegetarian food products by quantifying allergen-specific IgE against these. The source of the allergy or allergies is identified using the findings, and the appropriate course of therapy is chosen.

The Allergy GIT veg and non veg panel is a diagnostic test that checks for food allergies. It identifies possible allergies to commonly consumed vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods. The test uses a blood sample to measure the immune system's response. It specifically detects the presence and levels of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to various food allergens. This helps pinpoint sensitivity to certain foods.

Knowing about food allergies is important for good health. Allergic reactions can vary from mild issues like itching or hives to severe conditions like anaphylaxis. This panel is helpful for those with allergy symptoms. It helps identify triggers and make better choices about diet and lifestyle.

Reasons for Undergoing the Allergy GIT Veg and Non Veg Panel

There are several compelling reasons to consider undergoing the Allergy GIT veg and non veg panel:

  • Identifying Triggers: Pinpoints foods causing allergic reactions for better management.
  • Personalised Diet: Helps create safe dietary plans with healthcare providers.
  • Accurate Diagnosis: Differentiates allergies from intolerances or digestive issues.
  • Further Testing Guidance: Suggests additional tests for detailed allergy insights.

List of Parameters Considered During the Allergy GIT Veg and Non Veg Panel

The Allergy GIT veg and non veg panel measures several key parameters to assess an individual's allergic response to various foods:

  • Specific IgE Antibodies: The test quantifies the presence and levels of IgE antibodies against a range of non-vegetarian food allergens, including pork (Sus Spp.), egg yolk (Anda), chicken meat (Gallus Spp./Murgi), beef (Bos spp), salmon (Salmo Salar/Rawas), tuna (Thunnus Albacares), shrimp/prawns, cod fish (Gadus Morhua/Machhli), blue mussel (Mytilus Edulis), and egg white (Anda).
  • Total IgE Levels: In addition to specific IgE antibodies, the panel also measures total IgE levels, providing a general indicator of an individual's overall allergic tendencies and helping assess their allergic status.

Allergy GIT Veg and Non Veg Panel Preparation

Preparing for the Allergy GIT veg and non veg panel is relatively straightforward, with no major restrictions or special requirements:

  • Maintain Normal Diet and Routine: Prior to the test, individuals can continue their regular diet and lifestyle habits. There is no need for fasting or any specific dietary modifications.
  • No Special Precautions: The test does not require any particular precautions. However, it is advisable to inform the healthcare provider about any recent changes in diet, current medications, or overall health status, as these factors may influence the test results.

Allergy GIT Veg and Non Veg Panel Results & Interpretation

The results of the Allergy GIT veg and non veg panel provide valuable information about an individual's allergic response to the tested foods:

  • Normal Results: Low or undetectable levels of specific IgE antibodies against the tested foods are considered normal and suggest the absence of allergies to those particular items.
  • Abnormal Results: Elevated levels of specific IgE antibodies indicate a potential food allergy. It is crucial to interpret the results in consultation with an allergist or immunologist who can provide a comprehensive assessment and develop an appropriate management plan.

The Allergy-GIT Panel (Veg + Non Veg) is done to identify the specific foods that are causing allergic reactions in your digestive system. Here are the key reasons why someone might undergo this test:

  • Identify Food Allergies: This test helps pinpoint exactly which foods, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, are triggering your allergies. This is crucial for proper diagnosis and management of food allergies.
  • Understand Digestive Issues: Food allergies can sometimes manifest as digestive problems like diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps. This test can help differentiate these symptoms from other digestive issues, allowing for more targeted treatment.
  • Improved Food Management: Knowing exactly which foods you're allergic to allows you and your doctor to develop a safe and personalized food plan. This can significantly improve your quality of life by reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
  • Differential Diagnosis: Sometimes, symptoms that seem like allergies can be caused by food intolerances or other digestive conditions. This test can help rule out these possibilities and guide further investigations if needed.

It measures the IgE-mediated response to 43 different vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items including Egg White, Wheat, Peanut, Soyabean, Cow Milk, Cod Fish, Shrimp, Blue Mussel, Salmon, Tuna, Almond, Coconut, Cashew Nut, Tomato, Yeast, Garlic, Onion, Celery, Pork, Egg Yolk, Chicken Meat, Banana, Pineapple, Apple, Gluten, Spinach, cabbage, Caprica, Potato, Lentil, Rice, Corn, Chickpea, Casein, Brinjal, Lemon, Olive, Beef, Plaice, Brazilnut, Hazelnut, Pear, and Peach.

Total IgE levels are also measured.

This test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased IgE levels further confirms that. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis.
Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis.
