HBsAg Test (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen)
Also Known As : HBsAg Screening, Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Test

Brief Details
What Is an HBsAg Test?
The HBsAg test is a blood test used to determine if you are infected with the Hepatitis B virus. HBsAg stands for Hepatitis B surface antigen, which is a protein found on the surface of the virus.
The test requires a blood sample, typically drawn from a vein in your arm. This test helps detect and diagnose both new (acute) and long-term (chronic) Hepatitis B infections.
Frequently asked questions
Find quick answers to the most common questions about health tests, bookings, and reports.
A person remains infectious as long as the HBsAg test is positive. In acute infections, this may last weeks to months, while chronic infections can make someone infectious for life unless successfully treated and the virus is cleared.
Hepatitis B spreads through contact with infected blood, semen, or body fluids via unprotected sex, sharing needles, or mother-to-baby transmission during birth. It is also transmitted through exposure to contaminated blood through injuries or shared personal items like razors.
The HBsAg test can detect the virus 1-12 weeks after exposure, with an average of 4 weeks. If you have symptoms or are in a high-risk group, you can take the test anytime as advised by your doctor.
No, fasting is not required for the HBsAg test. You can eat and drink normally before the test, making it convenient to schedule at any time of day that suits your routine.
While severe dehydration can make blood collection more difficult, it's highly unlikely to affect the accuracy of HBsAg test results by causing false positive or negative results. However, staying well-hydrated is always recommended.
No special dietary preparation is needed for the HBsAg test. Continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor specifically instructs otherwise, and also inform them about any medicines, vitamins, or supplements you're taking.
The procedure involves cleaning your arm with an antiseptic, applying a tourniquet, inserting a sterile needle into a vein to collect blood in a vial, removing the needle, and placing a bandage over the puncture site.
The HBsAg test is qualitative, reporting results as Non-Reactive (normal, < 0.90 IU/mL) or Reactive (indicating infection, ≥ 1.0 IU/mL). Borderline results (0.90-1.0 IU/mL) require confirmatory testing for accurate interpretation.
