Environmental Allergy Panel Overview

An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system that causes undesirable reactions to certain substances like food, dust, pollen, drugs or even animal dander. These reactions normally do not occur in others. The substance causing the reaction is an allergen. Immunoglobin E is an antibody that the body produces in case of an allergic reaction. Total IgE test is a blood test used to measure the complete IgE levels in the blood, but it does not indicate what specific allergen is causing the reaction. The allergy-environmental panel is a screening that tests the body's reaction to 25 different sources of environmental inhalants by Phadiotop using ImmunoCAP technique. Based on the results the source of allergy/allergies is determined and the course of treatment is decided accordingly. Along with this, the allergen-specific IgE levels are also checked.

The Environmental Allergy Panel is a comprehensive diagnostic test designed to identify specific environmental allergens that trigger allergic reactions in individuals. This test assesses the body's immune response to various environmental inhalants, such as pollen, dust mites, mould, and animal dander. By measuring the levels of allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in the blood or through skin prick tests, the Environmental Allergy Panel helps determine the exact sources of allergic reactions.

Understanding the specific allergens causing allergic symptoms is crucial for developing effective treatment and management plans. The Environmental Allergy Panel provides valuable insights into an individual's sensitivity to common environmental allergens, enabling doctors to tailor treatment strategies accordingly.

The Allergy - Environmental Panel test is done for the following reasons:

  • To find out what triggers your allergies in the environment, such as mould, dust mites, pollen, etc.
  • To assess the body's response to 25 distinct sources of environmental inhalants.
  • To measure total IgE levels in the blood.
  • For suspected allergies due to certain sources of environmental inhalants (allergens) for determining the exact source causing it.
  • To help the doctor create an effective treatment and prevention plan for allergies.

Environmental allergy panel test measures the IgE-mediated response to 25 sources of environmental inhalants. The include Cat dander, Dog dander, Common Ragweed (Ambrosia Elatior )Close To Parthenium / Congress Grass, House Dust (Greer Labs), D Farinae (House Dust Mite), D Pterysinuss (House Dust Mite), Cockroach German (Blatella Germanica), Papdi Chibil / Elm, Penicillium Notatum (Fungi), Cladosporium Herbarum (Fungi), Aspergillus Fumigatus (Fungi), Candida Albicans (Fungi), Alternaria (Fungi), Cynodon grass (Bermuda Grass / Durva), Sorghum grass (Jhonson Grass / Jowar), Timothy grass (Phleum pratense / Ghass), Meadow grass (Poa pratensis ), Cultivated Rye (Secale Cereale), Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris / Bano, Barna, Sita Bani), Alder (Alnus incana), Birch (Betula verrucosa), Oak (Quercus alba), Saltwort (Salsola kali / pestifer), Common Pigweed (Amaranthus Retroflexus / Kaantewali Chauli).

Total IgE levels are also measured.

Environmental allergy panel test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased allergen-specific IgE levels further confirm that. Very often the test may be positive for more than one allergen as well. The further treatment course is decided based on the results.
Negative results may require other tests for differential diagnosis.
